AI for Public Libraries: What We Built, What We Learned, and What Comes Next

Last year, we shared our direction for AI at BiblioCommons: disciplined exploration rooted in trust, simplicity, and real library impact. This year, we’re sharing what we’ve learned.
In partnership with Partner Libraries, BiblioCommons prototyped AI features designed to reduce friction in discovery and engagement while upholding the values that make public libraries the most trusted civic institutions. From conversational question-and-answer tools to AI-supported catalog discovery and review summaries, we evaluated what library staff and patrons find valuable and explored what works best for public library use cases. The goal is to use AI to bring patrons closer to the library with fewer clicks, without compromising privacy, equity, or accessibility.
Join us for a look at our results so far, the guardrails shaping our approach, and how we’re moving forward responsibly. This session is designed for library leaders and digital strategists who want to ensure AI strengthens and enhances the public library experience, without compromising library values and trust.
Key takeaways:
- What responsible, library-centered AI looks like in practice
- Where AI has the potential to deliver meaningful value for patrons
- What we learned about accuracy, usability, and trust from Partner Libraries
- How libraries can differentiate from general-purpose AI tools
- What’s next as we refine and move from exploration to impact
