From Access to Impact: How Indianapolis Public Library's School Partnership Improved Student Reading Scores

Webinar-Resource-Image-2026-08-27-Improving Reading Scores

Improving student reading scores is a goal of most school/library partnerships but proving that the partnership moved the needle on reading outcomes is often a challenge.

When Indianapolis Public Library (IndyPL) partnered with Indianapolis Public Schools to integrate their shared ILS system across IPS schools, students checked out 34% more books within the first two months. More importantly, IREAD proficiency scores rose 10.2% district-wide, with third-grade proficiency climbing nearly 70%.

In this session, IndyPL staff share how the partnership was built from the ground up:
- The program and consortium design
- What it took to create a genuinely seamless experience for students and teachers
- How the teams worked through the IT integration, data privacy, legal agreements, and policy frameworks required to serve students across two institutional systems

This is a practitioner-level conversation for library leaders, IT teams, and program staff interested in what a library-school partnership looks like when it translates into real learning outcomes.
